North Georgia’s Carters Lake a Step Back in Time

Lakes Sidney Lanier and Allatoona, just outside of Atlanta, are two of the most frequently visited lakes in the nation, averaging a combined 14 million visitors annually. Atlanta’s urban sprawl can be found along the shorelines of these lakes, yet Carters Lake, situated one hour north of Atlanta in Gilmer County, looks much like it did when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers completed it in 1977.
